About Air India Express

 Air India Express is a low-cost airline based in Kochi, India. It is a subsidiary of Air India and operates short-haul international flights from its hub at Trivandrum International Airport.

It was founded on 1 May 2005 as a joint venture between the two national carriers of India, Air India and Indian Airlines (which were both operated by the government). Air India Express operates its own fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft to over 70 destinations across the Middle East, South East Asia and South Asia with focus on high density routes like Dubai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur etc.

Carry-on Baggage (Hand baggage): 

It is a kind of baggage that can be carried on board and can be stored in the overhead compartment.

Passengers are allowed wit the below for Hand baggage:

  • One-piece per passenger 
  • Maximum weight is 7 kg 
  • Ideal dimension is 55 cms X 35 cms X 25 cms.
  • All Passengers are allowed to carry an extra laptop purse or camera case.

Checked Baggage: 

It is a kind of baggage that is carried by the passenger in the hold of the aircraft. Air India Express has its own free allowance according to the ticket class, destination, and availability.


  • Must have your name or other personal identification affixed securely on the bag 
  • If the baggage is not carried on the same flight that you travel then all steps will be taken to ensure your baggage safety. 
  • baggage should not exceed 62 inches (158 cms).

Prohibited items in the checked baggage 

  • Portable Electronic Devices: iPods/ iPads/ Cell Phones/Laptops.
  • Negotiable Documents/ Securities/ Passports/ Visa Business Documents/ Identification Papers
  • Fragile materials 
  • Prescription Drugs
  • Valuable Items: Currency/ Jewellery
  • Perishable items such as cooked food, raw food materials

Special Baggage

It could be ‌a handbag or a checked bag, yet it has different dimensions. Air India Express defined all Special baggage. 

  • Bulky fragile bags
  • Golf Kit: 50% of the applicable excess baggage charge if in addition to the FBA
  • Skiing Equipment: 33 % of the applicable excess baggage charge if in addition to the FBA
  • Bicycle: In excess of free baggage allowance, will be charged one flat applicable charge and to be considered as a piece of 62 inches, irrespective of actual dimensions.
  • LCD / LED Television: The maximum acceptable size for LCD / LED televisions transported on Air India Express is 43 inches
  • Bulky or fragile items which if carried on board by blocking a seat will not come under the Free baggage allowance. These items are irrespective of actual dimensions and weight.

Delayed, Lost, and Damaged Baggage

  • Delayed baggage 

In case the passenger didn't receive his/her luggage

  1. Contact Air India Express personnel in the arrival hall and report the same. 
  2. Fill out the Property Irregularity Report (PIR), a copy will be given with a reference number for follow up action. 
  3. Maximum taxi fare reimbursement amount is limited to INR 1000 against a bill/ trip sheet for the same.
  4.  No Interim Relief will be provided for lost luggage.
  • Lost Baggage

In case your baggage is lost, you can  

  1. Your delayed baggage will be considered as lost after 21 days from the date of Property Irregularity Report.
  2. The compensation claim will be processed as per laid down procedures.
  3. All claims are to be substantiated with an itemised list of contents, description, and age together with proof of purchase/ownership of all such items.

Notes for Delayed and Lost Baggage 

  1. Copy of Boarding Card/ Proof of journey
  2. Copy of passport/ ID card issued by any Government Unit
  3. Details of the items being claimed.

The authorized person should carry the following documents:

  1. Letter of authorisation 
  2. Copy of boarding card
  3. Owner’s Government-authorized Photo ID, preferably Passport/ Driving License/ PAN card
  4. Photo ID card of the person who is allowed to collect the Item
  • Damaged baggage 

In case of baggage is damaged, you should contact the airline supervisor in the arrival hall please note that the company has no liability for the below reasons:

  1. Broken wheels/ handles/ straps
  2. Damage to over-packed/oversized bags
  3. Damage due to unsuitable packing
  4. Damage to pull handles / lost pull handles
  5. Items of a fragile or perishable nature
  6. Manufacturer/s defects.

Animals and Birds

  • Guide dogs only are allowed to be on board with their owners (blind and/ or deaf guests). Passengers with guide dogs should notify the airline in advance. 
  • Where carriage is not subject to the liability rules of the Convention, we are not responsible for injury to or loss, sickness or death of an animal which we have agreed to carry unless we have been grossly negligent.

Excess Checked Baggage

Passengers who exceed the free baggage allowance. In case the baggage exceeds the weight or the dimension, you have to purchase an extra allowance. Rates of the extra allowance are subject to availability according to the destination and availability. 

GST rates will be applicable to the value reflected on all Excess Baggage tickets (EBTs), issued in India, except from the exempted airports. Guests may also need to pay a handling fee for the excess baggage at the airport in addition to the normal excess baggage charge. Guests can purchase in advance a maximum 15kgs Excess Baggage subject to availability, at a flat rate.
